Vitellogenin: (Biological Classification > Speed of Evolution > High > RefOG015) - Vitellogenin is an egg yolk precursor protein, which is classified as a glycolipoprotein, having properties of a sugar, fat and protein. It belongs to a family of several lipid transport proteins, like microsomal triglyceride transfer protein and apolipoprotein B-100. All of them share a conserved N-terminus domain (Lipoprotein N-terminal Domain), which is necessary for lipid transporter activity. Vitellinogen precursors are multi-domain apolipoproteins that are cleaved into distinct yolk proteins, like lipovitellin-1 and phosvitin i vertebrate eggs (PUBMED:17314313), (PUBMED:12135361).
