Thrombospondin protein: (Biological Classification > Domain Shuffling / Evolution > RefOG037) - Thrombospondins (TSPs), a family of mammalian extracellular, calcium-binding glycoproteins, are multifunctional proteins playing role in angiogenesis, connective tissues development, immune response and synaptogenesis. The family consists of thrombospondins 1-5 and can be divided into 2 subgroups (TSP1/2 and TSP3/4/5). TSP1/2 are homotrimers, whereas TSP3/4/5 are homopentamers. TSP family has a complex evolutionary history involving gain, loss, or modification of a coiled-coil domain or distinct domains at the amino-terminus (Bentley and Adams, 2010).
